It starts early.5 weeks until it begins.........

About me- I am a wife/mother/sister/aunty/volunteer/best friend/cook & cleaner/ negotiator. (maybe the last three are how I feel running around after the children)
After 14 years of part time work and juggling children, and the last three years completing a degree in paramedicine. I am now taking the giant leap into [drum roll please] full time work and juggling children. This has come about because I need to do an internship for my ambulance job, my future career depends on this. I will be working a shift rotation of 48 hours a week (Two 11 hour days and two 13 hour night shifts) and fitting in some sleep and normal life in between. Wish me luck.

So far I have been prepping the children with subtle changes to our routine.

  1.  Alarm clocks for them. This reduces the need for me to wake them up. This is actually quite important because when I am on night shifts-I wont be home until 7.45 and 20 minutes is not enough time for them to actually be ready. I can do it, but they cant!
  2. Make their own lunches. This is a great time saver and they have rather surprisingly made some good healthy choices with the contents.
  3. Slow cooker meals. I have spent the last few weeks figuring out what works well with the slow cooker and if the children can follow a recipe and help out. So far, so good.
  4. Giving in to technology and allowing the youngest to have a mobile phone. I was actually surprised at how well she did. We have had a few test runs- seeing if she would look at her phone after school, for instructions on where I would be.
  5. Filling up the freezer. A mixture of frozen muffins and cakes and savoury meals are slowly starting to fill up the freezer.
  6. I have also managed to arrange flexible swimming lessons for the youngest, I wanted to be able to allow the children to continue with their activities and sports. It takes some planning but on paper it looks like it might work.
As for my greatest challenge, I think that will be getting enough sleep. More on that next time!
